Prime Minister: Walk Your Talk!

Thursday, March 20 - Friday March 28, 2008

Join a GLOBAL WEEK OF ACTION to support the March to Delhi by poisoned Bhopal survivors.

What To Do:

Get some friends together and have everyone spell out WALK YOUR TALK with their bodies (laying down is easier than trying against a wall - trust us), take a picture, sign it with everyone involved (and add the city name), and send the photo to rbodanyi at studentsforbhopal.org (we'll post them together on this page). If you like you can mail a physical photo to the Prime Minister himself - his mailing address is:

Mr. Manmohan Singh
7, Race Course Road
New Delhi, INDIA

The Pros:
- This action pressures the Indian Government, raises awareness, might attract media, and you can ask passers-by to call or fax the Indian government as well. What's not to like?
- The action can be done literally anywhere (with the possible exception of vertical walls; see above).
- The action doesn't require that many people; you can do it well with 15 participants but you might be able to scrape by with a bit less.
- The action is interesting to passers-by and might actually be more effective at drawing people in than traditional, shouting-style protests.
- The action is completely legal, quick, and safe.

The Challenges:
- Sometimes finding 15 people is challenging. You may have to spell out the slogan one word at a time, but this doesn't look quite as nice.
- You'll need a space large enough for the action, where you can also take a photo. Public parks/college spaces are usually large enough, and you might find large spaces inside malls/whatnot.
- Folks might not want to lie down outside if it's cold/wet.
- Requires some practice and someone to arrange people, as the letters don't always know if they're forming the right shape.
- Think of all the chocolate you could be eating if you weren't doing this action.

Requirements:
- Flyer for folks to hand out at the action
- Talking points for group leader to share with group about why the action is important, what it represents etc.
- Fax action or call in action sheets that are easy to use for tabling before and after the actual lie down action.
- Might be nice to have a slide show that could run on loop of the March to Delhi to give more context to those people who pass by but don't stop (this creates a larger visual as well for the media).
- Press outreach is always a requirement.
- All this and more available on our March to Delhi action page.

WE ALL LIVE IN BHOPAL

"The year 2003 was a special year in the history of the campaign for justice in Bhopal. It was the year when student and youth supporters from at least 30 campuses in the US and India took action against Dow Chemical or in support of the demands of the Bhopal survivors. As we enter the 20th year of the unfolding Bhopal disaster, we can, with your support, convey to Dow Chemical that the fight for justice in Bhopal is getting stronger and will continue till justice is done. We look forward to your continued support and good wishes, and hope that our joint struggle will pave the way for a just world free of the abuse of corporate power."
