Discussion and Performance
of "Bhopal"
On October 16, 2004, the 33rd Annual South Asia Conference at the
University of Wisconsin-Madison featured a discussion and the first
US performance of "Bhopal", a play by Rahul Varma. In
the afternoon, a panel discussion brought together two practitioners
of South Asian diaspora theatre - Rahul Varma from Canada and Logan
Shunmugam from South Africa - with two scholars of diaspora theatre
- Aparna Dharwadker (UW-Madison) and Neilesh Bose (Tufts U). Varma
discussed the writing and reception of BHOPAL, his recent play about
the 1984 industrial accident in the eponymous Indian city. Focusing
on the same play, Dharwadker discussed Varma's collaboration with
the leading Indian playwright-director Habib Tanvir, and the multiple
locations of performance (Montreal, Toronto, and six Indian cities,
including Bhopal) as significant new directions in the development
of South Asian diaspora theatre. The presentations were followed
later that evening by the first US staged reading of BHOPAL, which
drew a crowd of nearly 80 people.
